Viktoria Mitlyng (630) 829-9662 E-Mail: OPA3 @nrc.gov Prema Chandrathil (630) 829-9663 NRC FINES JANX INTEGRITY GROUP, INC. $49,000; BARS INDIVIDUAL FROM LICENSED ACTIVITIES FOR ONE YEAR The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has issued a $49,000 civil penalty to JANX Integrity Group, Inc., (JANX) for safety and security related violations involving the performance of industrial radiography by its employees. JANX is located in Parma, Mich.

The violations were identified during an NRC inspection at a temporary jobsite on Spy Island, Alaska. An investigation by the NRCs Office of Investigations was also conducted. As a result, safety and security violations were identified.

The NRC found that an individual, now a former JANX radiographer, deliberately performed radiographic imaging operations without a second qualified person and deliberately avoided and prevented an NRC inspector from completing his inspection. The NRC also found that radiation safety signs were not posted in the area while the work was being performed.

Security violations were also identified, the details of which are not available to the public due to the sensitive nature of security information.

These violations are of significant concern because the actions reflected inadequate oversight by the company and the individual acted irresponsibly, which could have resulted in significant health and safety consequences, said Charles Casto, Region III Regional Administrator. We expect the company to take responsibility to ensure safety and security are paramount and remain so when dealing with NRC regulated material.

The company has taken corrective actions to address this issue.

The NRC has issued an Order to ban the individual for one year from engaging in activities within NRC jurisdiction.

Both the individual and JANX will have to either accept, contest or request mediation of the NRCs decision.

Copies of the Enforcement Action will be posted on the Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) at the NRC website.
