Viktoria Mitlyng, 630-829-9662 Prema Chandrathil, 630-829-9663 NRC Names New Inspector at Fermi Nuclear Power Plant The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has selected John Gewargis as the new resident inspector at the Fermi nuclear power plant. He joins NRC senior resident inspector Tom Taylor at the facility.

Gewargis started his NRC career in 2021 as part of the Resident Inspector Development Program in the Region III office located in Lisle, Illinois. He passed his oral boards and completed the resident inspector qualification program.

Prior to joining the agency, he worked for the Naval Nuclear Laboratories for four years where he was a reactor and refueling engineer and crew testing engineer. In this position, he trained U.S. Navy officers and enlisted personnel in the operations and maintenance of Naval Nuclear Propulsion systems.

We look forward to John stepping into his new role as a resident inspector. He brings along his unique experience as an instructor with the Navys Nuclear Power Training Unit, said Region III Administrator Jack Giessner. His knowledge of the NRCs high standards, familiarity about reactor operations and ability to communicate make him highly effective in ensuring Fermi continues to follow our regulatory requirements.

Gewargis holds a bachelors degree in chemical and biomolecular engineering with a minor in mathematics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Each commercial nuclear power plant site in the United States has at least two resident inspectors who monitor day-to-day operations at the plant. They serve as the agencys eyes and ears at the facility, conducting inspections, monitoring significant work projects, and interacting with plant workers and the public.

The plant is located in Newport, Michigan, approximately 25 miles northeast of Toledo, and operated by DTE Electric Company.
