No: II-22-024 September 14, 2022 CONTACT: Dave Gasperson, 404-997-4417 NRC Schedules Pre-Decisional Enforcement Conference with BWXT Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will meet with BWXT Nuclear Operations Group Inc.,

Sept. 22, to discuss five apparent violations of regulatory requirements related to a June 2020 flash fire in the supercompactor facility that resulted in the death of a BWXT employee.

The conference will run from 8-11 a.m., Eastern time, at the NRCs headquarters in the Commission Hearing Room, One White Flint North, 11555 Rockville Pike, Rockville, Maryland. A portion of the meeting will be closed from public observation to discuss sensitive personnel information.

The five apparent violations of NRC requirements were identified during inspections conducted at the facility, based in Lynchburg, Virginia, between July 1, 2020, and March 5, 2021, and are related to BWXTs failure to control fire hazards in the supercompactor facility.

During the conference, BWXT will have the opportunity to provide its perspective or additional information regarding the apparent violations before the NRC makes its final enforcement decision.

The NRC will review the information provided during the meeting and finalize its decision in a publicly available document.

Interested members of the public not attending in person can take part in the meeting virtually using the Microsoft Teams platform or by calling 301-576-2978 and entering the conference ID 122263649#. NRC staff will answer questions from the public before closing the event for public observation.
