Viktoria Mitlyng, 630-829-9662 Prema Chandrathil, 630-829-9663 NRC to Hold Public Meeting to Discuss 2021 Performance of Fermi Nuclear Power Plant The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will discuss the agencys annual assessment of the safety performance of the Fermi nuclear power plant during an in-person public meeting scheduled for May 16. The one-unit plant, located in Newport, Michigan, is operated by DTE Electric Company.

The meeting will be held at 6 p.m., Eastern time, at Monroe County Board of Commissioners Chambers, Monroe County Courthouse, 125 East Second Street, in Monroe, Michigan. NRC staff responsible for plant inspection and oversight will participate in the discussion, including the resident inspectors based full-time at the site.

The NRC determined that Fermi operated safely during 2021. All inspection findings and performance indicators were green or very low safety significance. As a result, Fermi remains under the NRCs normal level of oversight. This oversight entails thousands of hours of inspection each year.

The NRC Reactor Oversight Process uses color-coded inspection findings and indicators to measure plant performance. The colors start at green and increase to white, yellow or red, commensurate with the safety significance of the issues involved. Inspection findings or performance indicators with more than very low safety significance trigger increased NRC oversight.

Inspections are performed by two NRC resident inspectors assigned to each plant and specialist inspectors from the Region III Office in Lisle, Illinois.

The annual assessment letters for Fermi, as well as the meeting notice, are available on the NRC website. Current performance information for the plant is also available and is updated on a quarterly basis.
