NRC NEWS U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION Office of Public Affairs, Region II 245 Peachtree Center Ave. NE, Suite 1200 Atlanta, GA 30303-1257 Web Site: www.nrc.gov No. II-10-055 July 16, 2010 CONTACT: Roger Hannah (404) 997-4417 E-mail: OPA2@nrc.gov Joey Ledford (404) 997-4416 NRC SCHEDULES MEETING WITH AREVA IN LYNCHBURG TO REVIEW PERFORMANCE OF NUCLEAR FUEL FABRICATION FACILITY The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff has scheduled a public meeting with officials of AREVA NP, Inc., in Lynchburg, Va., on Monday, July 26, to discuss the results of an NRC review of the companys commercial nuclear fuel fabrication facility.

The meeting will begin at 10:30 a.m. EDT in the customer conference room of AREVAs corporate offices, located at 3315 Old Forest Road in Lynchburg. The meeting is between the NRC and AREVA, but people attending will be given an opportunity to ask questions of the NRC staff after the business portion of the meeting.

NRC inspectors reviewed licensee performance at AREVAs Lynchburg facility from April 26, 2008, through April 24, 2010, in the areas of Safety Operations, Radiological Controls, Facility Support, Safeguards and Special Topics. The review found that AREVA continued to conduct its activities safely and securely, and did not identify any specific areas needing improvement.

As a result of this performance, NRC inspections at the plant during the next review period are being conducted at the normal level of inspection for this type of nuclear fuel assembly facility, and no additional inspections are required.

Copies of the meeting notice and the NRC letter to the company outlining the results of the review will be available on the NRC Web Site at www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/adams/web-based.html . The numbers to access the documents are ML101900341 and ML101690060.
