NRC NEWS U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION Office of Public Affairs, Region II 245 Peachtree Center Ave. NE, Suite 1200 Atlanta, GA 30303-1257 Web Site: www.nrc.gov No. II-10-042 May 26, 2010 CONTACT: Roger Hannah (404) 997-4417 E-mail: OPA2@nrc.gov Joey Ledford (404) 997-4416 NRC NAMES NEW RESIDENT INSPECTOR FOR MIXED OXIDE FACILITY U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission officials in Atlanta selected Brannen Adkins as the resident inspector for the Mixed Oxide (MOX) Fuel Fabrication Facility located at the Savannah River Site in Aiken, S.C.

Adkins joined the NRC in 2008 as a construction project inspector in the NRC Region II Office in Atlanta. Prior to joining the NRC, he worked as an engineer and project manager at the Savannah River Site. He also worked as a quality engineer for Molten Metal Technology in Oak Ridge, Tenn., and as a nuclear engineer at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, Va. Adkins earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Auburn University.

Brannen Adkins experience and commitment to safety will help ensure that the construction of the MOX facility is completed according to NRC regulations and in a way that protects people and the environment, said NRC Region II Deputy Regional Administrator for Construction Loren Plisco.

The MOX facility, which will be owned by the Department of Energys National Nuclear Security Administration, is part of an effort to make surplus weapons-grade plutonium into more proliferation-resistant forms. Converting the plutonium into MOX fuel will enable it to be used in commercial reactors to generate electricity.

Adkins joins NRC Senior Resident Inspector Mel Shannon and Site Secretary Marilyn Evans. The NRC inspectors can be reached at 803-819-5068.
