CENTERDOR ENERGY Power Generation Group Perry Nuclear Power Plant Mail Address: 216 280-5915 Lew W. Myers 10 center Road P.O. Box 97 FAX:216-28M029 Vice President Perry, ONo 44081 Perry, OH 44081 June 12,1997 PY-CEI/NRR-2168L United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission Document Control Desk Washington, D.C. 20555 Perry Nuclear Power Plant Docket No. 50-440 Inspection of Perry Nuclear Power Plant Core Shroud (TAC No. M90107)

Ladies and Gentlemen: l In response to Generic Letter (GL) 94-03, "Intergranular Stress Corrosion Cracking of Core Shrouds in Boiling Water Reactors", a letter dated September 22,1995 (PY-CEI/NRR-1982L) noted that core shroud inspections were scheduled to be performed at the Perry Nuclear Power Plant (PNPP) during the sixth refueling outage (RFO-6). This was based on performing the inspections after PNPP achieved eight (8) on-line years of operation in accordance with the guidance given in the Boiling Water Reactor Vessel and Internals Project (BWRVIP) report entitled "BWR Core Shroud Inspection and Flaw Evaluation Guidelines,"(BWRVIP-01), and in the NRC Staff's Safety Evaluation for the Perry Nuclear Power Plant Unit 1, dated February 10,1995.

Since the Perry Nuclear Power Plant will still not have achieved eight on-line years of h operation by the beginning of RFO-6, the core shroud inspections are now scheduled for performance during the seventh refueling outage (RFO-7), presently scheduled to begin in April 1999. The inspection plan for the core shroud inspection will be submitted at I least three months prior to the start of the outage.
