. FACILITY: Arizona Nuclear Power Project- Emergency Classification Palo Verde Unit 2 X Notification of Unusual Event ,.

Docket No. 50-529 Alert Site Area Emergency General Emergency Not Applicable

SUBJECT:

EMERGENCY DIESEL FIRE DURING OUTAGE.

At approximately 8:40 p.m. on February 8,1987, the Unit 2 control room received a fire warning alam for the "A" Train Emergency Diesel. An auxiliary operator verified that a fire. existed and an Unusual Event was declared at 8:50 p.m. The fire apparently

, r;sulted from the ignition of diesel fuel which appears to have leaked from a separated compression fitting in the fuel injection line to the No. 5 right cylinder. The fire was extinguished at 8:52 p.m. by the plant fire department using water and dry chemical.

The Unusual Event was terminated at 9:05 p.m. The unit has been in cold shutdown for a maintenance outage which began on January 10, 1987.

At the time of the fire the diesel generator unit had operated for approximately 5 1/2 hours of the 24 hours2.777778e-4 days
0.00667 hours
3.968254e-5 weeks
9.132e-6 months
required by the integrated safeguards testing in progress at the time. An operator attempting to extinguish the fire was hospitalized as a precautionary measure because of smoke inhalation. He was released following a satisfactory medical examination.

The fixed fire suppression system for the room involved did not actuate. Preliminary indications are that the fire did not burn hot enough to melt the fusible links which actuate the suppression system.

The licensee has quarantined the "A" Diesel Generator Room and plans to conduct an inytstigation into the cause of the fire.

The licensee has issued a press release.

This infomation is current as of 10:00 a.m. (MST) February 9,1987.
