WITHDRAWAL 0F COUNTY FROM EMERGENCY PLAN The Chatham County (N. C.) Commission has voted unanimously to wfthdraw from emergency planning for the Shearon Harris plant. The action, taken at a meeting on Mai ?.7,' came after the commission last week agreed to consider a resolution to that effect pr'oposed by the Coalition for Alternatives to Shearon Harris (CASH). Chatham County is inside the 10-mile emergency planning zone.

Carolina Power & Light (CP&L) has informed Region II that the State of North Carolina joined the company in expressing opposition to the county's action, Also in response to a CASH request, the Durham (N. C.) City Council earlier had adopted a resolution calling on CP&L to convert the Harris plant to a non-nuclear fuele.1 generating station. Durham is outside the 10-mile : one and is served by Duke Power Co- CASH has .

announced that it will seek similar withdrawals from emergency planning by other counties.

Both CP&L and Region II are continuing to respond to media inquiries concerning the Chatham County action. The presiding Atomic Safety and Licensing Board recently issued a final decision authorizing issuance af an operating licene for the Harris plant, which is 97 ~

percent complete, ,
