SUMMARY

OF THE AUGUST 1, 2023, MEETING TO DISCUSS FITNESS FOR DUTY FOR THE OKLO DESIGN (EPID: L-2022-LRM-0042)

Meeting Information:

Applicant: Oklo, Inc.

Project No.: 99902095 Meeting

Title:

Meeting with Oklo to Discuss Fitness for Duty for their Advanced Reactor Design Meeting Date: August 1, 2023 Meeting Type: Partially Closed Public Meeting Notice Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS)

Accession No.: ML23193A986 Applicant Presentation Slides ADAMS Accession No.: ML23249A170 Meeting Summary:

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff conducted the meeting in accordance with NRC Management Directive 3.5, Attendance at NRC Staff-Sponsored Meetings (ML21180A271). Highlights from the meeting included the following:

The NRC staff met with Oklo, Inc. (Oklo) to discuss its approach to fitness-for-duty (FFD) for its advanced reactors and provide feedback on the fitness-for-duty program standardized template.

W. Jessup The FFD meeting was part of a broader meeting with Oklo on several technical and programmatic topic related to its ongoing preapplication engagement activities supporting the design.

The staff previously met with Oklo to discuss FFD during a March 2023 meeting on security (ML23171B120). At that meeting, the staff stated that a future meeting on FFD was warranted and provided questions to support a future meeting.

Oklo shared the following goals for the August 1, 2023, meeting:

o Discuss key considerations of Oklos facility and approach to FFD o

Respond to feedback on the FFD program standardized template o

Discuss potential exemptions related to fitness-for-duty As a result of the meeting, the NRC staff developed a better understanding of Oklos approach to FFD, provided feedback, and shared references to guidance documents.

The NRC staff noted that, depending on whether Oklo requests any exemptions to the regulations for FFD, the NRC staffs review of this information in a license application could be quite complex, principally because of the lack of detailed FFD program information available at the meeting and the specific exemptions which Oklo is considering for submittal.

The NRC staff and Oklo concluded that no additional pre-application interactions are currently planned on this topic.
