Meeting Summary:

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff conducted the meeting in accordance with NRC Management Directive 3.5, Attendance at NRC Staff-Sponsored Meetings (ML21180A271). Highlights from the meeting included the following:

The purpose of the June 29, 2023, meeting was for Oklo to familiarize the NRC staff with the materials proposed for use in Oklos advanced reactor designs and discuss the related codes and standards that Oklo intends to implement for these materials. The materials meeting was part of a broader meeting with Oklo on several technical and programmatic topic related to its ongoing preapplication engagement activities supporting its advanced reactor design.

The NRC staff previously met with Oklo on February 10, 2023. At this meeting, the NRC staff shared information regarding material qualification issues for advanced reactor licensing. During the February 10, 2023, meeting, the NRC staff inquired about the materials proposed for Oklos reactors. The June 29, 2023, served as a follow up to the February 10, 2023, meeting.

The NRC staff stated that, overall, the proposed material selections for Oklos advanced reactor design appeared positive. However, the NRC staff noted that additional discussions on the topic would benefit both sides by enabling a dialogue and feedback on the codes and standards that Oklo intends to use for component design, construction, and inservice inspection.

The NRC staff and Oklo agreed to schedule another meeting to discuss this topic.

No regulatory decisions were made as a result of this meeting.
