% 2 2 1985 MEMORANDUM FOR: James P. Knight, Acting Director Division of Engineering FROM:
Themis P. Speis, Director Division of Safety Technology
SUBJECT:
PROPOSED REVIEW PLAN FOR PG&E LONG TERM SEISMIC PROGRAM
Reference:
Memorandum from S. Brocoum to J. Knight, " Proposed Review Plan for PG&E Long Term Seismic Program," dated March 20, 1985 Our review of the above noted reference indicates a need to clarify activities with respect to the probabilistic risk assessment portion of the program. The impetus for this program is a seismic license condition on Diablo Canyon, Unit 1.
As such, the Division of Engineering is very heavily involved from the outset of the program in evaluating the seismic characteristics of the plant and site.
Because of this heavy involvement, we believe that it is appropriate for DE to provide the staff position regarding the seismic hazard curves and component / structure fragilities that are used in the probabilistic assessment.
Consequently, we view the i
activities of the Reliability and Risk Assessment Branch to be in the area of systems analyses and assembling plant damage states based on the seismic characteristics embraced by DE. We. intend to project our resource requirements for RRAB and contractor funding on this basis.
We will gladly cooperate with you in this program, but request that you provide a long term schedule so that resource allocations can be adequately considered.
Sanford Israel, X28478, will be the OST contact on this effort.
