6 December 17, 1981 Dockets: 50-498 50-499 MEMORANDUM FOR:
File 1
FROM:
W. C. Seidle, Chief. Engineering Inspection Branch
SUBJECT:
TELEPHONE CALL FROM HL&P REPRESENTATIVE REGARDING HAYWARD TYLER PUMP COMPANY' Dn December 7, 1981, Mr. Goldberg, HL&P, called to inform me that a Mr. Worshaw of the Vermont Vanguard newspaper has alleged that the subject
~pump company has shipped defective pumps to nuclear power plants including STP. 'It was also alleged that the officers of the pump company knew the pumps were defective prior to shipment, and the paperwork associated with the defective pumps was-changed to reflect that the pumps were acceptable.
According to Goldberg, some 36 pumps were received at STP; 11 have been installed (none safety-related); and of the 36 pumps received, 6 were safety-related. (In a meeting in RIV on December 14, 1981,.Mr. Goldberg infonned me that a total of 52 Hayward Tyler pumps had been received at l
STP.) The six safety-related pumps are ECW system pumps.
The alleger stated that he had a worker's affidavit that the pumps were defective. The defects involve voids in the pump bodies and bad bearings.
Mr. Goldberg stated that HL&P intended to conduct an investigation of the allegations.
The above allegations appear to relate to the Hayward Tyler Pump Company allegations identified in the RIV Daily Report input, dated December 3, 1981.
