Subject:

Crystal River Unit 3 Docket No. 50-302 Operating License No. DPR-72 NUREG-0737, item II.K.3.5 Automatic Trip of Reactor Coolant Pumps

Dear Sir:

Florida Power Corporation (FPC) has received (on February 23, 1933) and reviewed Generic Letter No.83-10f on the above subject. As requested in your letter and within 30 days of receipt of same, FPC is informing you of the intent to submit plans and a schedule for mutual resolution of the reactor coolant pump (RCP) trip issue on or before July 1, 1983. This delay is requested to allow time for evaluation of our position based on previous analyses that have been performed over the past several years relating to the RCP trip criteria and to evaluate our present position related to SECY 82-475 and Generic Letter 83-10f.

Current operating procedures provide guidance to the operator relative to RCP trip based on the criteria of a low reactor coolant pressure Engineered Safety Features Actuation System signal. These procedures will remain in effect until the Emergency Operating Procedures based on the Abnormal Transient Operating Guidelines (ATOG) are instituted or better criteria defined.

3F-0383-28 It is the intention of FPC to reference a generic submittal as members of the B&W Owners Group which provides the technical justification for treatment of reactor coolant pumps during accidents and transients.
