Gentlemen:

The purpose of this correspondence is to inform you of a j potentially reportable defect under 10CFR, part 21. We have

! supplied our part no. 77379, flexible hose assembly, to the Calloway plants and have subsequently discovered that the assembly was welded with a 600 rather than a 30 elbow in-stalled. This condition has been reported to the Bechtel Power Corporation in Gaithersburg, Maryland. A copy of the report is enclosed for your reference.

The purpose of this letter is to bring to your attention a defect we believe exists in the above described hose assembly which was shipped to the Calloway plant on April 7, 1981.

We have received from the Wolf Creek plant another P/N 77379 l hose assembly in which a 60 rather than a 30 elbow (P/N l 77968) had been installed. Since the two hose assemblies l (The one built for Wolf Creek and the one built for Calloway) l were manuf ac tured at the same time and from the same materials, l we believe that the assembly shipped to you also has a dis-crepant elbow.

Our Project Engineer, Mr. Ron Nystrom, has determined that, if present, a 600 elbow might result in premature failure of the hose assembly. However, the exact conditions of install-ation of the hose assembly also affect its serviceability.

l Accordingly, we request that you have one of your engineers l contact Mr. Nystrom so that they might determine if the elbow is discrepant and, if so, coordinate in arriving at a dis-position.

Should it prove necessary to rework the hose assembly to conform to our drawing, we shall expedite our work to the best of our ability. Of course, all costs con-nected with reworking the hose assembly would be borne by Metal Bellows Corporacion.
