PRELIMINARY ESTIMATE OF LEAK RATE VS TIME FOR THE GINNA STEAM GENERATOR TUBE RUPTURE EVENT 1/25/82 Per your request, we have prepared the attached preliminary estimate of the leak rate vs time during the Ginna Steam Generator Tube Rupture event of 1/25/82. The initial leak rate was estimated from the reactor coolant 4
system depressurization and pressurizer level drop during the first few minutes. This initial rate was used to estimate a break size using a critical flow model. The break size is estirnated at approximately 3/4 of the size of-a double-ended tube rupture.
The subsequent leak rate vs time was then calculated using this break size and the prirrary and secondary pressures as presented in the January 26, 1982 event chronology developed by HRC Rcgion I and the licensee.
Our plot showing several important parameters and the status of several systems is also attached to aid in understandtrig the leak rate estimate. We expect that the'ieak
. rate vs time will be known much more accurately after a. final chronology is~ made available.
I assume that you will handle passing this on to the other Comissioners Technical Assistants as appropriate.
