On March 8, 1982, Rochester Gas and Electric Corporation (RG&E) completed cutting a 3 inch hole in the side of the "B" Steam Generator (S/G) at the R. E. Ginna Nuclear Power Plant.

Upon completion of the hole, the burst tube and the two tubes in front of it were removed for metalurgical exami-nation. The licensee had identified two other. tubes in the vicinity of the burst tube which they had planned to removo However, further inspection through the hole showed these tubes (R45C54 and R44C56) had only fragments remaining and therefore would yield only limited metalurgical data.. In order to obtain sufficient metallurgical data the licensee has removed 3 other tube section's (R44C54, R43C54 and R43C56) around the burst tube.

Complete removal of the peripheral tube (R45C47) with,ECT indications at 24 inches from the U-bend area is expected to be accomplished today.

RG&E now plans t'6' complete refueling operations prior to performing further l

repairs to the."B" S/p A meeting with the NRC staff to present the licensee's l

finalized recovery program is tentatively scheduled for the week of March 22, 1982.
