SUBJECT:

DAILY HIGHLIGHT R. E. GINNA Mr. John Oberlies, Vice President of RG&E held a press' conference late Friday afternoon, February 19, 1982, to give an update on the recovery activities at the Ginna Plant.

In addition to the information. reported in the daily highlight of February 19, Mr. Oberlies reported that RG&E plans to cut a 21/2 inch hole in the "B" Steam Generator (S/G) at the location of.the ruptured tube.

In order to determine the failure mechanism, 4 tubes will be removed in that area between the tube sheet and first support plate for metalurgical examination. An additional 8 damaged periphertal tubes are also slated for removal.

There are an additional 13 tubes in the number 4 wedge area that RG&E believes require stabJlization. This will be accomplished by cutting the plugged tubes at the bend at the top of the bundle on the secondary side.

A flexible stabilizdr will be inserted.in the tube, down into the tube sheet until an expander bolt is located withi.n_the top support plate where it will be secured.

In the number 5 wedge area, 4 damaged tubes will be stabilized by drilling out the existing plugs from the primary side and inserting a stabilizer /. plug into each of the subject tubes to replug the tube.

Inspection of the "A" S/G was completed by T.V. camera over the weekend.

No damaged tubes were detected, however two foreign o'ujects have been found. One appears to be a piece of wire while the other is a piece of metal approximat'ely 2" x 1" x 1/2".

RG&E is reviewing video tapes of the "A" S/G inspection.an,d is making plans for retrieving the objects.

A meeting between the NRC staff and RG&E is planned for March 2,1982.. This meeting will be for the purpose o.f updating the staff on the recovery activities at Ginna.
