DAILY HIGHLIGHT

-s R. E. GINNA On March 1,1982 members of the NRC staff met with RG&E to discuss-the proposed recovery program for R. E. Ginna. RG&E presented results of their steam generator (S/G) inspections to date, inchding videotape of the damage sustained by some of the peripheral tubes.

RG&E presented an outline of their overall recovery program for the "B" S/G.. They pre-sented a written submittal requesting permission to remove a small number of S/G tube sections for metallurgical examination in order to obtain additional information necessary to finalize repair plans and to assist in determination of the failure mechanism. The NRC staff concurred with the proposal and instructed RG&E to inform the NRC if additional tubes that might provide valuable infonnation are to be removed.

Upon completion of the tube sample removal, RG&E will perfonn previously planned maintenance.to the upper portions of the steam generator while formulating their final course of action. The licensee expects to be able to return for a meeting with the staff to7 resent their finalized recovery program in the next two or three weeks.

Later in the day on March 1,1982, the pilot hole was completed in the side of the "B" S/G in the vicinity of the ruptured tube.

Visual inspection through the hole showed that the two tubes (R43C55 and R44C55) in front of the ruptured tube (R42C55) are severed near the tube sheet.

By pushing these tubes to the side, RG&E was able to view the burst.

The burst is facing directly towards the two tubes between the ruptured tube and the tube wrappert The licensee is proceeding to expand the hole t'o 3 inches in diameter in preparation for removing the ruptured tube and other tubes as described in their submittal.
