SUBJECT:

DAILY HIGHLIGHT - R. E.'Ginna Plant On March 23, 1982, members of the' NRC' staff met with representatives of

.'RG&E and Westinghouse to discuss the status of repair activities proposed for the Ginna' Plant.

RG&E received NRC permission to remove from the "B" steam generator.another 17 tubes that showed signs of external damage.

This would bring to 24 the total number of tubes' removed from the "B" generator since January 25, 1982. This number includes the tubes already removed for metallurgical samples and the three tubes that were severed just above.the tube sheet and just below the first support plate. Only the sections of the tubes between the tube sheet and the first support plate will be removed. Westinghouse evaluation shows that there 9111 be no adverse effects on the steam generator or remaining tubes caused by the removal of this number of tubes.

Over the weekend, removal of the structurally degraded tubes from the. "B" steam generator commen'ced follo' wing a delay caused by decontamination activities in the area of the "B"

steam generator."Td date, 6 tubes have been removed from the number 6 wedge are'a7 This number includes the 5 tubes identified for removal during the March 23, 1982 meeting plus one additional tube (Row 10 Column 91) that showed greater damage than had been detected by the video inspection.

The removal method was to cut out a 9 inch section just above the tube sheet and then to cut the remainder I

of the tube, 2 to 4 inches below the first support plate. These 38 inch sections were then slid to the 6 inch hand hole and removed in one piece.

e,.

In the number 4 wedge area, removal of the lower 9 inches of the 11 tubes planned to be removeifffrom the vicinity of the ruptured tube is just about complete.

In order to reduce the total dose for the activity, the 38 inch upper sections of the tubes will be removed by cutting the tubes into short sections for removal rather than trying to remove them in one piece.
