r SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION Report No.: 50-302/81-038/04T-0 Facility: Crystal River Unit #3 Report Date: July 15,1981 Occurrence Date: First half 1981 (determined at plant 6/5/81)

Identification of Occurrence:

Contrary to Environmental Technical Specification 5.6.2.C(2) a single measured value of radioactivity concentrations in critical pathway environmental medium samples exceeded ten times the control station value specified in Environmental Technical Specification 3.2.

Conditions Prior to Occurrence:

NA N Description of Occurrence:

The semi-annual green leafy vegetable sample analy7.ed from station C48 for Strontium 90 was determined to be eighty-three picoeuries per kilogram which exceeded ten times the control stccion value of eight picocuries per kilogram.

Designation of Apparent Cause:

Apparent cause is undetermined at this time.

Analysis of Occurrence:

Sampling from other pathways analyzed for strontium and the Gamma Spectroscopy analysis of the green leafy vegetable sample are within normal limits. In addition, the concentration of Strontium 89 was non-detectable in the sample. Crystal River Unit 3 gaseous releases contain more Sr-89 than Sr-90.

The effect upon the health or safety of the general public will be evaluated based on resample results.

Corrective Action:

Resample is being performed. If the level of Sr-90 at C48 is confirmed, followup sampling will be utilized to aid in the determination of the apparent cause. Supplemental reports will be provided as necessary.

Failure Data:

This is the second report for this type occurrence.
