Subject:

James A. FitzPatrick Nuclear Power Plant Docket No. 50-333 Updated Mark I Containment Program Modification Schedule

Dear Sir:

The Power Authority hereby provides a further update of the Mark I Containment Program modification schedule which was previously transmitted to you in the above referenced letter.

To date, the installation of the vent header deflectors and the installation of saddle supports under the torus have been completed. Torus shell to column connection reinforcement and torus support column reinforcement are accomplished by the latter modification. Also, anchor bolts have been installed which will permit the engagement of the base mat with the torus saddles and torus columns.

At the present we are still missing some load information necessary to form the final load combinations and stress levels for the remaining modifications. Accordingly, the lack of these data prevents the finalization of the modification design details with a resulting impact on the overall schedule.

Additionally, certain modifications have been designed based on available information and conservative bounding analysis; we consider that the attached piping modifications can not be approached in this manner. Piping stresses will be frequency sencitive and will be affected by shell rotations and accelerations kOW >

and the effects of such a complex excitation can not be predicted.

Thus, the attached piping analysis must be performed after the torus structural analysis is complete. The torus structural response provides the input to the piping system and, therefore, is essent41 to the calculation of piping system stresses. As previously mentioned the status of torus structural analysis is such that we do not expect to have attached piping analyis com-plete, with time remaining for design and fabrication before the 1981 outage.

Due to the above we can not complete the modifications during the refueling outage tentatively scheduled for the Fall of 1981. However, we feel confident that the overall effort i.e., engineering, design and procurement will be completed such that the installation can commence on June 1, 1982.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us.

Very truly yours, Jn {. $  %
