6. Description of Occurrence:

During the period 0900 7 March 1978 to 0900 8 March 1978, at least 82.61 kg of fish and shellfish were impinged on the intake screens at Crystal River Units ,

1, 2, and 3. Of the 82.61 kg impinged, Unit 3 accounted for .i.56 kg (18% of J

total). Three finfish species accounted for 59.'80 kg (72% of coctl); batfish '

l 50%, pinfish 123, striped burrfish 10%. 'Two commercially utilized 2...'.lfish 4

f species, the pink shrimp and the blue crab accounted for 14.60 kg (18% of total).

The remaining oiomass impinged was distributed among several species of fish and shellfish.

The impingement reported is an underestimate of the actual impingement because the plant staff at Units 1 and 2 operated the intake screens at an unauthorized j time during the 0300-0900 senpling period which altered the impingement sample and allowed scTe of the smaller organisms impinged to be lost. Plant staff per-sonnel have since been instructed as to the importance of the sampling programs at CR #1, 2, and 3 to ensure against future occurrences of this type.

7. Designation of Apparent Cause of Occurrence:

The following unusual or periodic event was notsd during the occurrence:

One oil barge entered the intake canal during the sampling period.

This event may have been partially responsible for the impingement observed.
