2. Facility: Crystal River Unit #3 -
3. Rcport Date: 20 April 1978
4. Occurrence Date: June 1977 - March 1978 (discovered 11 April 1978 & decer:nined at plant 20 April 1978)
5. Identification of Occurrence:

Environmental samples were not analyzed by contractors using procedures which provided LLD's equal to or less than those required by Environmental Te.ch Specs.

6. Conditions Prior to occurrence:

N/A i

7. Dascription of Occurrence: l1 The following samples had LLD's greater than those required by ETS for the below 5 indicated periods.

Milk (1 stations) June 1977 Aug. 1977 Sept. 1977

(# ETS) 1 .I 1 s

Marine Plants (2 stations) Second hi# 1977 First Balf 1978_

(# ETS) 1 7 S. Dasignation of Apparent Cause:

Sample sire and coup

  • ti:nes of the samples nay not have been sufficient to obtain LLD's within the ETS requirement. Natural radiation background :nay also have caused activity in the samples which can result in higher LLD's.
9. Analysis of Occurrence:

Of the 12 nuclides that had greater than allowed LLD's, 9 nuclides had no detectable l activity and the other 3 nuclides had activities that were less than the preoperational l 95 percentile values of those nuclides.

10. Corrective Action:

For the silk pathway, the occurrences were in the strontium 90 analyses and the 1977 annual average LLD for Sr-90 was equal to the required ETS LLD. Therefore, no further corrective action is necessary.

For the Marine Plant ?r.-hway, the occurrence in 1977 vas in the Sr-90 analyses and the 1977 annual averag.' LLD for Sr-90 was equal to the required ETS LLD. Therefore, x no further corrective .ction is necessary. '"he occurrences in 1978 vere in the gaen analysis and was the first one for 1978. More efficient counting configurations 8002280 S

5 /FLMY INFORMATION 8l and overnight count times are being tested to bring the LLD's for Marine Plants '

in line with those required. This research should be completed in time to apply the  ;

tesults to the next Marine Plant Samples.

11. Failure Data:

This is the seventh report for this type occurrence. Refer to:
