SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION Report No.: 50-302/79-004/03L-0 Facility: Crystal River Unit #3 Report Date: 2 February 1979 Occurrence Date: 15 January 1979 Identification of Occurrence:

Cable tunnel sump pump inoperable contrary to Technical Specification 3.8.1.1.a.

Conditions Prior to Occurrence:

Mode 1 operation (100%)

Description of Occurrence:

At 0030 while performing Cable Tunnel Sump Pump Operability Verification Surveillance (SP-322), it was discovered that one cable tunnel sump pump failed to start. Both emergency diesel generators were verified operable within one hour through per-formance of SP-354, Emergency Diesel Fuel Oil Quality and Diesel Generator Monthly Test. Breaker Verification Surveillance (SP-321) was completed satisfactorily.

Designation of Apparent Cause:

The cause of this event is attributed to pump failure.

Analysis of Occurrence:

There was no safety hazard to the plant or general public as both emergency diesel generators were available and verified operable.

Corrective Action:

Normal maintenance restored operability. No further corrective action as the pump was replaced.

Failure Data:

Fourteen previous cccurrences reported, third occurrence for cable tunnel sump pumps.
