Report Date: 25 January 1979 Occurrence Date: 2 January 1979 IdeTtification of Occurrence:

Thirty-three foot wind direction monitor inoperable contrary to Technical Specification 3.3.3.4.

Conditions Prior to Occurrence:

Mode 1 power operation (92%)

Description of Occurrence:

At 0955, during routine plant operation, it was observed that oue thirty-three foot wind direction monitor was inoperable. Investigation by maintenance personnel revealed that the directional sensor had malfu:.ctioned.

The directional sensor was renewed and operability was restored on 8 January 1979.

Design ition of Apparent Cause:

The cause of this event can be attributed to a wind direction sensor bearing being contaminated with coal dust from the surrounding coal yard.

Analysis of Occurrence:

There was no hazard to the health and safety of the plant or general public as no unplanned gaseous releases to the atmosphere occurred during this time frame.

Corrective Action:

No corrective action necessary as the wind direction sensor was renewed through normal maintenance. A Modification Approval Record (MAR) has been issued to install ice shields and new type bearings in an effort to eliminate coal dust contamination.

Failure Data:

Two previous occurrences of an event of this type reported.
