Subject:

James A. FitzPatrick Nuclear Power Plant Docket No. 50-333 Additional Responses to the Draft Safety Evaluation Report (SER) Relating to Fire Protection Program

Dear Sit:

'te have sent responses to the draft safety evaluation repcrt via several letters (JPN-79-12, March 7, 1979, JPN-79-25, May 7, 1979, and JPN-79-40, July 2, 1979). These letters contained two tables, Table 3.1, Implementation Dates for Licensee Proposed Modifications and Staff Requirements and Table 3.2, Completion Dates for Studies.

In discussion with your Mr. P. Polk and Mr. M. Virgillio in the last few weeks, we indicated that we intend to revise some of these dates and stated our reasons for doing the same.

By this letter, w_ _ listing below those items that require additional time from thoL_ stated previously:

Table 3.1 Item 3.1.1 Interior Hose Stations (PF-9)

Previously when we stated that this item was complete we had assumed that the staff requirements applied to existing hose stations. Our review indicates that some 29 new or relocated hose stations need to be modified to meet the staff requirement stated in Section 3.1.1 of the SER. These will be completed by October 1980.

Item 3.3.2 Signaling Circuit Supervision (PF-19)

The study is expecr^'

' o be completed by August 1979 and any modifications ,ompleted by October 1980.

Item 3.3.'? .ctrical Cable Penetration Qualification (PF-27)

The testing of these penetrations are underway and any modifications if required will be completed by October 1980.

Item 3.3.15 Testing of Carbon Dioxide Fire Suppression Systems (PF-18)

At present this testing is expected to be done by January 1980 and if any modifications are required they will be completed by October 1980.

Item 3.3.16 Flame Retardant Coating As stated in our letter JPN-79-40, July 2, 1979, the entire fire test documentation for cabling installed in the FitzPatrick plant consists of several hundred pages and as agreed with your Mr. P. Polk, it will be forwarded to you by August 1979.

Item 3.2 Item 3.2.1, 3.2.3 and 3.2.5 All these studies are late by one to four months and are expected to he completed by August 1979. The submission dates to NRC are shown on Table 3.2.
