Report Number: 78-09/04L Report Date: March 23, 1978 Occurrence Date: February 9, 1978 Facility: Salem Generating Station Public Service Electric & Gas Company Hancocks Bridge, New Jersey 08038 IDENTIFICATION OF OCCURRENCE:

On February 9, 1978, during the preparation of the Annual Non-radiological Environmental Operating Report, the average annual (1977) suspended solids concentration in the non-radioactive waste treatment basin effluent was calculated from data and was found to exceed 25 mg/l (Ref.: Section 2.2.2 of Appendix "B" to Operating License DPR-70, Environmental Technical Specifications).

CONDITIONS PRIOR TO OCCURRENCE:

N/A DESCRIPTION OF OCCURRENCE:-

The annual average suspended solids concentration in the treated effluent from the non-radioactive liquid waste treatment basin for 1977 was 63.9 mg/l.

DESIGNATION OF APPARENT CAUSE OF OCCURRENCE The high level of suspended solids* in *the non-radioactive liquid waste basin effluent was a result of the high suspended solids of the river water used to quench the steam generator blowdown, before being introduced into the waste basin. The monthly average of the total su~pended solids in the river water for 1977 was 166 ppm.

ANALYSIS OF OCCURRENCE N/A CORRECTIVE ACTION:

The Public Service Engineering Department is evaluating several proposals to redu6e the total suspended solids in the non-radio-acti ve liquid waste basin to within the required limits. The proposals include a closed recovery system .for steam generator

.. Report 78-09/04L .'

~ blowdown, installation of a closed heater, and the redesign of the waste basin to include coagulation A$ a means o~ lowering the total suspended solids.

FAILURE DATA:

None Identified.
