Public Service Electric and Gas Company P.O. Box 236 Hancocks Bridge, New Jersey 08038 Nuclear Department September 19, 1983 Dr. Thomas Murley, Administrator IE lIQ FILE* OOPl Region I U. s. Nuclear Regulatory Commission 631 Park Avenue King of Prussia, Pennsylvania 19406

Dear Dr. Murley:

RADIOLOGICAL EFFLUENT RELEASE REPORT NO. 1 AND 2 UNITS SALEM NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION DOCKET NOS. 50-272 AND 50-311 Environmental Technical Specification 5.6.1.2 requires that a report summarizing the radioactive materials discharged from the Salem Nuclear Generating Station be submitted to the Commission within sixty days after January 1 and July 1 of each year. Our latest report, RERR-14, could not be submitted within sixty days of July 1, 1983 for the reasons as detailed below. We will submit the report no later than September 30, 1983.

Public Service Electric and Gas Company has recently purchased a new corporate computer system. All of the computer programs necessary for preparing the radioactive effluent release reports which resided on the old corporate computer system were recently rewritten or converted to run on the new system. Due to the fact that the new computer uses a different programming language, many of the existing programs could not be used. During the reprogramming efforts, some computer programming errors were noted. As a result of having to correct the computer programs, we were unable to prepare the effluent release report summarizing our releases in time to meet the sixty day reporting requirement of the Technical Specifications. It should be noted that only the progra~s necessary to summarize the effluent release data in the format of Regulatory Guide 1.21 were involved. The computer programs necessary for analysis of samples or for demonstrating compliance with Technical Specifications' curie release limits were not involved since these operations are performed on computers at the Salem Station.

Dr. Thomas Murley, Administrator U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission 9/19/83 The computer programs necessary to prepare the radioactive effluent release report in the format required by the NRC are now fully operational. It is anticipated that future radioactive effluent release reports will be submitted within sixty days of January 1, and July 1 of each year as required.

Should you have any questions in this regard, do not hesitate to contact us.

Very truly yours, u~
