Dear Mr. Grier:

NRC IE BULLETINS NO. 78-l2, 78-l2A AND 78-l2B "ATYPICAL WELD MATERIAL IN RPV WELDS" NO. l AND 2 UNITS SALEM GENERATING STATION In response to the subject bulletins dated September 29, l978; November 24, *l978; and March l9, l979 respectively, we have reviewed the generic report, "Atypical Weld Material in Reactor Pressure Vessels" prepared by Combustion Engineering, dated June 8, l979 and forwarded to PSE&G by Westinghouse on June 22, l979. This report addresses Items l,2,3 and 4 of Bulletin 78-l2 and was forwarded t~ the NRC by Combustion on June 8, 1979.

Item 3 of the Bulletin was reviewed with information obtained from the Surveillance Program. None of the filler metal listed in the Surveillance Report for the beltline region of *the Salem 1 and 2 reactors is listed in Section VII of the Combustion Report. Section VII shows the disposition of filler metal that did not meet procurement specifications.

Item 4 of the Bulletin requested information on archive weld material. Combustion did not provide for archive weld material.
