Exit Interview The inspection scope and findinge were summarized on April 11, 1979 with those persons indicated in Paragraph above. The inspection consisted of observation of ultrasonic examination of reactor coolant pump elbow splitter plates.
3.
Unrcsolved Items Unresolved items were not identified during this inspection.
4.
Reactor Coolant Pump Elbow Splitter Plate Examination As a result of RII letter dated April 6, 1979, and discussions with NRR, VEPCO decided to ultrasonically (UT) examine Unit 1 flow splitter plates.
The examination was to determine if the cracking found in one unit 2 plate existed in unit 1 plates.
The three unit I splitter plates were UT inspected in accordance with North Anna UT procedure 1-TP-1, " Examining Splitter Plates in Steam Generator-To-Fump Elbows"\\ developed by VEPC0 and Westinghouse Nuclear Technology Division. Theitest consisted of using a straight beam, 1" diameter, 1.0 MHz search u' nit to UT through the elbow wall from the outside into the edge of the splitter plate. -2-The inspector reviewed the UT procedure (1-TP-1) and observed the following inspection activities:
a.
Demonstration of the UT procedure capability on a kdown crack in elbow "C" splitter plate of Unit 2.
b.
UT inspection of the " wall side" of "A" and "C" elbow splitter plates (unit 1).
The original UT inspection revealed 6 spot indications on the " wall side" of "A" elbow splitter plate and 1 indication approximately 6" long on the " wall side" of "B" elbow splitter plate.
After grinding the surface of the elbow to get a better surface finish in the area of the indications, a reexamination revealed no recordable indications in "A" elbow splitter plate and a 1 " long and 3t" long indication where the 6" indication had been in the "B" elbow splitter plate. This information was presented to NRR by VEPCO in a meeting on April 12 1979.
Within the areas inspected, no items of noncompliance or deviations were identified.
