Westinghouse Energy Systems b 32 l 2 Elecific Corporation mosamama n23nsa ET-NRC-93-3944 NSRA-APSL-93-0303 Docket No.: STN-524)03 August 16,1993 Document C4mtrol Desk U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D. C. 20555 ATTENTION: MR. R. W. BORCHARDT 6UBJECT: TRANSMITTAL OF DRAWING OF A STEAM DISTRIBUTER FOR THE AP600 -

CORE MAKEUP TANK TEST FACILITY

Dear Mr. Borchardt:

Please find attached with this letter, a drawing which provide details of a steam distributer assembly being used in the AP600 Core Makeup Tank (CMT) test facility.

The steam distributcr, which is installed in the inlet to the CMT tank, is being used to improve condensation behavior under low pressure, high drain rate conditions with a cold CMT. The steam distributer minimizes the potential for and magnitude of pressure fluctuations resulting from steam jet penetration into the cold CMT water. At the same time, the distributer improves the drain down behavior of the CMT. It is noted that the pressure oscillations observed in the CMT shakedown tests without the steam distributer do not pose a structural concern. Use of the distributer does however provide for a smoother, more quiescent, CMT draindown behavior. It is Westinghouse *s intention to perform the remainder of the shakedown tests and the matrix tests with a steam distributer installed.

Also attached, in response to a NRC staff request, is a table providing the test conditions and observed behavior from these shakedown tests and core makeup tank test facility piping diagrams. Test data frorn shakedown tests (with and without the steam distributer) will be included in the final test report on the CMT tests.

Plans are underway to install a similar steam distributer device in both the SPES-2 and OSU integral test facilities. Appropriate design changes for the AP600 plant are being evaluated.
