Attention: Mr. J. P. O'Reilly, Regional Administrator

Dear Mr. O'Reilly:

SUBJECT:

Grand Gulf Nuclear Station Unit 1 Docket No. 50-416 License No. NPF-13 File 0260/L-835.0 Special Report 83-032/0 -

Smoke Detectors Covered During Welding Activities AECM-83/0283 On April 15, 1983, smoke detectors in rooms OC213, OC202, and OC302 in the Control Building were covered to prevent an alarm condition while welding was being performed in these rooms. The Action Statements of Technical Specification 3.3.7.9 were entered and an hourly fire watch was conducted while the planned maintenance activity was performed. The detectors were not restored to operability within 14 days, therefore, this report is being submitted as a Special Report pursuant to Technical Specification 6.9.2.

The detectors were uncovered on May 1, 1983, and the system was returned to normal operation. The event had no affect on the health and safety of the public and did not constitute a threat to plant safety. This is a final report.

Yours truly, eb a wry, JPM: sap oa::
