On May 9, 1997 Southern California Edison (Edison) met with the staff of the Nuclear Regulatory Comission (NRC) to describe recent findings of eggcrate '

degradation in the San Onofre Unit 3 steam generators. The purpose of this letter is to confinn certain comitments made during that meeting.

At the meeting with the NRC on May 9. Edison presented the results of ,

inspections performed on the secondary side of the Unit 3 steam generators 1 which identified areas of degradation of the eggerates. Edison's preliminary ,

assessment of the condition was discussed along with a detailed discussion of l the analysis being performed to confirm that design basis requirements are met with the degraded eggcrates. Our plan for a comprehensive visual inspection of the eggcrates during the current outage was also presented.

During the May 9 meeting, Edison comitted to submit a report of our ,

evaluatiori of the condition of the Unit 3 steam generators at least 7 days l prior to entry into Mode 4. It is our intent that this report be a high quality, comprehensive report addressing the conclusions of our evaluation and i the bases for our conclusions. Following submittal of this report, Edison )

will meet with the NRC staff in Washington D. C. to discuss this evaluation ll prior to Mode 4 entry. . During the May 9 meeting, Edison also comitted to  ; j submit a final report 90 days af ter restart from the current refueling outage.
