EDISON v:#da?

An LDISON INTERNATIONAL Company May 16, 1997 U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Comission Attention: Jack W. Roe, Director DivisionofReactorProjectsIII/IV Washington D. C. 20555

Dear Dr. Roe:

Subject:

Docket No. 50-362 Steam Generators San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Unit 3

~

On May 9, 1997 Southern California Edison (Edison) met with the staff of the Nuclear Regulatory Comission (NRC) to describe recent findings of eggcrate degradation in the San Onofre Unit 3 steam generators. The purpose of this letter is to confinn certain comitments made during that meeting.

At the meeting with the NRC on May 9. Edison presented the results of inspections performed on the secondary side of the Unit 3 steam generators 1

which identified areas of degradation of the eggerates.

Edison's preliminary assessment of the condition was discussed along with a detailed discussion of the analysis being performed to confirm that design basis requirements are met with the degraded eggcrates. Our plan for a comprehensive visual inspection of the eggcrates during the current outage was also presented.

During the May 9 meeting, Edison comitted to submit a report of our evaluatiori of the condition of the Unit 3 steam generators at least 7 days prior to entry into Mode 4.

It is our intent that this report be a high quality, comprehensive report addressing the conclusions of our evaluation and i

the bases for our conclusions.

Following submittal of this report, Edison will meet with the NRC staff in Washington D. C. to discuss this evaluation l l prior to Mode 4 entry.. During the May 9 meeting, Edison also comitted to j

submit a final report 90 days af ter restart from the current refueling outage.
