During the Unit 3 Cycle 9 outage, Southern California Edison (SCE) completed an inspection of steam generator tubes at San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, Unit 3.

In Reference 1, SCE reported that 100% of the tubes in Steam Generator E089 were examined by bobbin probe. During the Unit 3 Cycle 10 outage, SCE discovered the recorded data from the Cycle 9 outage for 16 tubes was incorrect.

Document Control Desk July 15,1999 SCE now believes these tubes were probably not examined by bobbin during the Unit 3 Cycle 9 inspection. All 16 tubes were verified as no detectable discontinuity (NDD) or i were identified with less than .20% through-wall wear during the Unit 3 Cycle 10 inspection (Reference 2).

SCE previously informed the NRC that the Unit 2 Cycle 9 midcycle inspection results l had an error affecting 21 tubes (Reference 3). The Unit 2 Cycle 9 midcycle inspection error was discovered after completion of the Unit 3 Cycle 9 steam generator tube inspections. SCE's ongoing evaluation for Unit 2 will encompass this Unit 3 )

occurrence, and SCE will incorporate our findings into the applicable inspection i processes. A table of the 16 affected tube locations in Steam Generator E089 is l provided as an enclosure.

l' if you require any additional information, please contact myself or Mr. C. E. Williams at (949) 368-6707.
