Re: St. Lucie Unit Nos. 1 and 2 Docket Nos. 50-335 and 50-389 Antici ated Transients Without Scram On March 1, 1989, Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) met with the NRC to discuss the conceptual design of the St. Lucie Units 1 and 2 plant modifications to meet 10 CFR 50.62, >>Requirements for reduction of risk from anticipated transients without scram (ATWS) events for light-water-cooled nuclear power plants." In that meeting, the Staff requested bi-monthly updates on the modifications implementation status. Attached is the status of the 10 CFR 50.62 modifications at St. Lucie Units 1 and 2 as of March 15, 1990.

~ f ATTACHMENT 10 CFR 50 '2 IMPLEMENTATION STATUS AS OF MARCH 15'990 ST LUCIE UNITS 1 AND 2 The status of engineering activities for implementation of 10 CFR 50.62 is:

Unit 2 The engineering design of the Engineered Safety Features Actuation System (ESFAS) and Auxiliary Feedwater Actuation System (AFAS) portion of the ATWS modification is continuing and is approximately 50% complete.

2 ~ The status of procurement activities for implementation of 10 CFR 50.62 is:

Consolidated Controls Corporation (CCC):

Unit 2 Module engineering for the ESFAS cabinet portion of the Diverse Scram System (DSS) is complete.

The DSS module prototype fabrication is in progress and prototype testing is scheduled for mid-April.

Combustion Engineering (CE):

Unit 2 The AFAS Matrix Relay printed circuit boards for the AFAS are in the engineering phase.

The Qualification Analysis, drawing and technical manual revisions are due in mid-May.

Other Procurement:

Unit 2 The load contactors have been received onsite.

3 ~ Installation of ATWS modifications at St. Lucie Unit 1 is completed. Final system test will be conducted prior to the completion of the current refueling outage. Modifications are on schedule for ATWS modifications implementation at St. Lucie Unit 2 during the upcoming calendar year 1990 refueling outage.
