Re: St. Lucie Unit 2 Docket 50-389 Antici ated Transients Without Scram On March 1, 1989, Florida Power and Light Company (FPL) met with the NRC to discuss the conceptual design of the St. Lucie Unit 1 and 2 plant modifications to meet 10 CFR 50.62, "Requirements for reduction of risk from anticipated transients without scram (ATWS) events for light-water-cooled nuclear power plants." In that meeting the staff requested bi-monthly updates on the modifications implementation status. Attached is the status of the 10 CFR 50.62 modifications at St. Lucie Unit 2 as of July 16, 1990.

10 CFR 50.62 IMPLEMENTATION STATUS AS OF JULY 16, 1990 T L IF IT 2 The status of engineering activities for implementation of 10 CFR 50.62 is:

The Plant Change/Modification packages necessary for installing the ATWS systems on St. Lucie Unit 2 have been completed by Nuclear Engineering and transmitted to the St. Lucie Plant for implementation.

The status of procurement activities for implementation of 10 CFR 50.62 is:

Eaton-Consolidated Controls (ECC):

~ On-site Diverse Scram System (DSS) prototype module testing was successfully completed at the end of May.

~ Hardware procurement is complete, and fabrication of the St.

Lucie Unit 2 Engineered Safety Features Actuation System (ESFAS) module is in progress. Completion is expected by September 30.

Combustion Engineering (CE):

Fabrication of the St. Lucie Unit 2 Auxiliary Feedwater Actuation System (AFAS) module is in progress. Completion is expected by September 1.
