12.1.2Makesurethatthecleanedsteelsuraceiscompatible withtheTHERMO-LAG 330-1Subliming Materialbymakingcrosshatchadhesiontestsasfollows:.CrossHatchAdhesionTest.Theprimeriscutoveranareaapproximately 4"by4"inasquarematrix,eachsquarebeingapproximately 1/2"by1/2".Ahighqualitytapeis'applieddiagonally.to thesquare.Uponcompletion ofthetapeapplication, itisrubbedin~firmlytoassuregoodadhesion.

Withonecompleteperkingmotion,thetapeisremoved.Ifmorethan3percentofthePrimerisremovedfromthesurface,theapplication isfaulty.Thistestshouldbeperformed inareaswhicharedeemedcriticalandinasmanyplacesasrequiredbythespecification.

Uponcompletion oftheCrossHatchAdhesionTest,thetestareasshouldbeagainwiththeTHERMO-LAG 351-2Primerbyeitherbrushingorlightspray.r2-43

AlwaysapplyabarriercoatofTHERMO-LAG 351TypePrimeroversteelsurfaceswhichhavebeenpreviously primedwithazincbasedprimer.Alldoubtfulsurfacesshouldberemovedusingmechanical cleaningmethods.12.1.3ApplythePrimertotheproperlypreparedsteelsurfaceinonecontinuous coatusingsprayequipment oraroller.Theminimumacceptable dryprimerthickness shouldbe0.002incheswhichisnormallyachievedbyapplyingataspreadrateofcirca200sq.ft.pergallon.12.1.4MeasurePrimerthickness usinganapprovedmagneticdirectreadinggauge.12.1.5Makecrosshatchadhesiontestsontheprimedsurfacetoassure~properadhesionbetweentheprimerandthesurfaceofthesteelitempriortoproceeding withtheapplication oftheTHERMO-LAG 330-1Subliming Material.

Thecoatingshallbeappliedinaccordance withinstructions giveninParagraph 12.2or12.3herein.12.2THERMO-LAG 330-1SubliminMaterial-SraAlication12.2.1ApplytheTHERMO-LAG 330-1Subliming Material-SprayGradeoveraproperlypreparedsurface.Makesurethatthesurfacetobecoatedisclean,dry,above40Fandfreefromscale,rustorothercontaminants.

12.2.2Applythematerialinasmanypassesasrequiredtoprovidetherequireddryfilmbuildof'hecoatingthickness, takingcaretoavoidslumpingorsaggingofthecoating.Normally, arequired0.500inchdryfilmcoatingthickness isaccomplished byapplyingthreewetcoatsof0.255inches.However,thethickness whichcanbesafelyappliedinasinglepasswilldependonthetemperature, humidityandotherfactorsthatare.bestdetermined.

Thesewetthickness checksshallbemadeeveryfive(5)squarefeetoreverytwo(2)runningfeetofcoatedsurfacearea.(Note:Whentakingmeasurements, allowforashrinkage rateofcirca25Xbetweenthewetandthedesireddryfilmcoatingthickness.)

12.2.5Removeexcessbuildupofcoatingmaterialatedgesandjointsbybrushingorrollingthesurfacewithadampspongeroller.12.2.6Sprayedgesofthesubstrate fromeachside'ocausethematerialtowraparoundtheedge.Iftheedgecoatingisnotcompletely closed,useawetrollerortroweltosealtheedgesurface.12.2.7Removeallruns,sags,dripsorothersurfaceimperfections beforethematerialcures,usingwetspongerollers,brushesorhandtrowels.12.3THERMO-LAG 330-1SubliminMaterialTrowelAlication12.3.1Trowelthematerialtoauniformthickness usingmoderatepressureandavoidoverworking.

Thetrowelshouldbewettedwithwaterwhenasmoothfinishisrequired.

12.4'.DrFilmThickness Measurements 12.4.1Takedryfilmthickness measurements aftertheappliedmaterialhascured.Measurement shallbemadeusingelectrical, penetrating ormagneticmeasuring instruments.

2-45 l3.0REPAIRPROCEDURES TherepairofadamagedsectioninaTHERMO-LAG 330FireBarrieriseasilyaccomplished bycuttingoutandremovingthedamagedmaterialandthenfillinginthecutoutsectionwithnewmaterial.

Thefirststepinthisprocedures istoremovethedamagedandloosematerialusingaknifeandscraper.Careshouldbeexercised thatthedamagedmaterialiscutbackuntilsoundadheringmaterialisreached.Thenextstepistoundercuttheedgesaroundthecutoutsectiontoformabevelededge.Allforeignmatteristhenremovedfromtheexposedsubstrate surfaceinthecutoutsection.Finally,theTHERMO-LAG 330Subliming Materialissprayedortroweledintothecutoutsection.Ifnecessary, severalcoatscanbeappliedtoachievethedesiredfilmthickness.

Thesteelcolumnwasprotected byworkmenintheemployofthesubmittor undertheobservation ofmembersoftheLaboratories'taff.

Thecolumnsurfaceswerewipedwithasolventtoremovesurfacecontaminates.

Theprimerwassprayedontothecolumnusinganairgun.7hemasticcoating,whichwassuppliedinsteeldrums,wasspray-applied tothecolumnsurfacesusingequipment designedforsuchpurposes.

Thewetanddrydensities ofthemasticsubliming coatingweredetermined byapplyingthematerialata'representative.

Whilethemasticcoatingmaterialwascuring,severalcrack'arying inwidthfromhairlineto1/8in.formedattheintersection ofwebsandflangesofthecolumn.Thesecrackswere~repairedninedaysafterthesprayinghadbeencompleted.

Thefinaldryfilmthickness of15/32in.wasdetermined onthebasisof108measurements takenonthecolumn40daysafterthesprayinghadbeencompleted andthematerialhaddriedatroomtemperature toaconstantweightcondition.
