1.0INTRODUCTION

AmericanElectricPower(AEP)replacedtheD.C.CookUnit2steamgeneratorsin1988.Aspartofthereplacementproject,thesteamdomeswereremovedanda3"steelendplatewasweldedtothetransitionconetosealthesteamgeneratorlowerassembly(SGLA)priortoplacingtheminstorage.CNSintendstoshiptheseSGLAsfromD.C.CookunpackagedwiththeapprovalofDOT.TosupporttheDOTrequestforexemptionfromseveraloftheshippingrequirementsallowingtheSGLAstobeshippedunpackaged,thedoseratewasestimatedattheendoftheSGLAforthehypotheticalcasethatthe3"steelendplatewasremovedduringtransportation.'hisdoserateestimatewascomparedtothelimitingdoserateforaTypeApackagedshipmentofSCO.2.0EVALUATIONMETHODOLOGYTheradioactivityintheheatexchangertubesp;oducesaradiationfieldwhichcanbedetectedandquantifiedexternaltotheSGLA.TheamountofradioactivitycanbeestimatedfromamodeloftheSGLAbyadjustingtheinputactivityuntilthecalculateddoseratematchesthemeasureddoserate.Usingthisestimatedactivityandadjustingthemodelbyremovingtheendplate,thedoserateatthenowopenendoftheSGLAcanbecalculated.AEPprovidedsurveyresultsofexternalmeasurementsmadeonthefourSGLAs.Includedinthesurveywasameasurementoncontactatthecenterofthesteelplatewelded,tothetransitioncone.The.maximumdoserate,measured.was42mrem/hr.TheMicroshieldpointkernelcomputercodewasusedtomodeltheSGLAandcalculatedoseratesatthecenteroftheendplate.Thecontaminatedheatexchangertubeswereassumedtobetheonlysourceofradiation.TheisotopewasassumedtobeCo-60.Atthetransitionconeendofthesteamgenerator,thetubesbendinau-shapeformingasemi-sphericalarrayoftubes;theremainingstraightsectionoftubesformsacylindricalarray.Microshieldallowsalimitednumberofsourcegeometries,noneofwhichexactlymatchtheshapeofthetubebundle.Toapproximatethetubebundle,twosourcegeometrieswereused,asphereandacylinder.Thespherewasexpectedtounderestimatetheactualsourceandthecylindertooverestimateit.Foreachgeometry,asourcewasdeterminedthatproducedadoserateontheoutsideofthe3"plateequaltothatmeasuredbyAEP,i.e.,42mrem/hr.Withoutchangingtheactivity,the3"steelplatewasreplacedbyairandtheresultingdoseratecalculated.3.0RESULTSTheactivitywhichresultsin42mrem/hrontheendplateis6.3Ciand27.5Ciforthesphericalandcylindricalmodel,respectively.Thedoseratewithouttheendplate,calculatedwiththesphericalmodel,is580mrem/hr.Thedoseratewithouttheendplate,calculatedwiththecylindricalmodel,is870mrem/hr.ER-98-012I[,REV.1PAGE3

4.0CONCLUSION
