1.0 Purpose .

The purpose of this procedure is to provide instructions for performing periodic inspections of cranes and hoists (excluding chain hoists) .

9.2 The presence of any of the following conditions requires that wire rope be evaluated to determine whether further use of the rope would constitute a safety hazard.

9.2.1 Ten randomly distributed broken vires in one rope lay or five broken wires in one strand of one rope lay.

9 2.2 Wear of one-third the diameter of individual outside wires. '

9.2.3 Kinking, crushing, bird-caging, or any other damage resulting in distortion o f the rope structure.

9.2.4 Evidence of heat damage from any cause.

9.2.5 Reduction from nominal diameter of more than:

9.3 Hooks

The presence of any of the following conditions requires that the hook be removed from service and scrapp,ed.

9.3.1 Evidence of da= age from chemicals.

9.3.2 throat opening more that 15% greater than the throat opening of an unbent hook.

9.3.3  !! ore than 10 degree twist from the plane of an unbent hook (i.e. , any visible twis t) .

9.3.4 Any indication of cracks noted during visual inspection or found during non-destructive examination.

9.3.5 Cracks or deformation of end connecticas.

. 10.0 Interference Items N/A 11.0 Procedure 11.1 Frequent Inspection 11.1.1 Run the crane or hoist through the limits of its travel without a load.

11.1.2 Ensure that operating mechanism are in proper adjustment and do not interfere with normal operation.

11.1.3 Ensure that li=it suitches make and break properly resulting in correct limits on travel.

NOTE: Care should be exercised when testing limit switches. Each limit switch should be checked by slow 1v running to the limit or inching in i short pulses of motion. If a limit switch malfunctions, stop motion ic=ediately.

I 11.1.4 If applicable, remove power by isolating and tagging

11.1.5 Visually inspect air and hydraulic systems. Check lines, tanks, valves, and pumps for signs of deterioration or leakage. Check hydraulic fluid levels.

11.1.6 Visually inspect moving parts. Check for excessive or abnormal wear and inadequate or improper lubrication.

Ensure that rope reeving is in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions (refer to the references, if required).

11.1.7 Compare any defects or damage noted with the acceptance requirenants, Section 9.1. Notify your >bintenance Supervisce if equipment does not meet acceptance requirenents, 11.1.8 Visually inspect holding brakes, brake shoes, brake wheel and components, 11.2 Wire Rope Inspection 11.2.1 Visually inspect all wire rope for signs of decrease in original strength. Especially check for the following I conditions:

11.'2.1.1 Reduction of rope, diameter below nominal diaoetet due to loss of core support, internal or external corresion, or wear of outside wires.

- 11.2.1.2 The number of broken outside wires and the distribution of broken wires.

11.2.1.3 Worn outside wires.

11.2.1.4 Corroded or broken wires at end connections.

11.2.1.5 Corroded, cracked, bent, worn, or improperly applied end' connections.

11.2.1.6 Severe kinking, crushing, cutting, or unstranding.

11.2.1.7 Heat damage.

11.2.2 If any defects are noted, compare with acceptance requirements, Section 9.2. Notify your >!aintenance Supervisor if equipment does not meet acceptance requiremente.

11.2.3 Report the results of your inspection on Data Sheet (Enclosure 13.1) .

sheaves and cheek plates. Inspect blocks for loose pins, bolts', and guards. Inspect hooks for cracks, sharp edges, twist and distortion. Comparc any defect or damage with acceptance criteria, Section 9.3. If hooks is not satisf actory for service, tag it out of service and ensure that it is removed and scrapped.

Psg3 8 11.3.3.8.1 Non-destructive examination - Obtain the services of Quality Control to perform non-destructive examination of the hook. This inspection may be performed in the field or at a suitable test station as agre'ed to by >bintenance and Quality Assurance. Attach a copy of the QA inspection report to Dat's Sheet (Enclosure 13.2).

11.3.3.9 Wire Rope, Fastenings and Terninal Hardware - Inspect cable, sockets, swivels, trunnoins and connections for damage, broken wires / strands and lubrication.

11.3.3.10 Observe number of cable wraps on hoist drum at lowest working limit. Minimum two (2) complete wraps.

11.3.3.11 Capacitv signs - Inspect for damage for mounting bolts and brackets. Check ' markings on load signs for proper rating capacity.

11.3.4.14 Hoist, Limit Switches - Remove covers and inspect all electrical and mechanical components for malfuncticn including contacts,' springs, ratchets, pins, arms, and insulators, rollers, cams and dogs. Inspect cover gaskets, counterweights and guides. Inspect all securing bolts and guards.

11.3.4.15 Liehting System - Inspect lighting fixture for adequate support, proper location, damage, evidence of overheating and damaged or broken socket and lenses.

Inspect switches for proper operation, broken or missing parts and covers. Inspect conductors for loose or damaged wires, supports and conduits junction boxes and raceways.
