%.....,/ October 12, 1995 CHAIRMAN Dr. Franticek Pazdera, Director Nuclear Research Institute Rez, plc 250 68 Rez, Czech Republic I

Dear Dr. Pazdera:

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the hospitality that you and your colleagues extended to me and my staff during our recent visit to the Czech Republic, and all the arrangements you undertook on our behalf. I especially appreciated your own willingness to take time out from chairing a session of an importent technical conference in order to accompany us on our visit to your institute.

Given my background and experience in research, I particularly enjoyed my visit to the Rez Institute, and was very interested to learn of the breadth and scope of activities in which your staff is engaged. The brief tour of your key experimental facilities, and the explanations provided by the specialists at each location, gave me an overview of the high level of technical expertise available in the Czech Republic which can be tapped by both the utility and the nuclear regulators. The availability of such indigenous capability is an important element in maintaining a high level of nuclear safety culture and practice in the Czech nuclear power program.

I also want to acknowledge receipt of your letter of October 1 concerning the upcoming IAEA safety mission. My staff is looking into this matter, and we will get back to you on this in the near future.

Again, many thanks for your kind hospitality and courtesy. I hope that when you are next in the Washington area, we will have an opportunity to meet again.

Sincerely Shirley Ann Jackson 1
