April 20, 1984 U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation Washington, D.C. 20555 Attention: Mr. D.G. Eisenhut, Director Division of Licensing Gentlemen:

SUBJECT:

IN THE MATTER OF 238 NUCLEAR ISLAND GENERAL ELECTRIC STANDARD SAFETY ANALYSIS REPORT (GESSAR II)

DOCKET NO. STN 50-447 GE PROPOSED EVALUATION PLAN FOR CONSIDERATION OF PROPOSED DESIGN MODIFICATIONS

Reference:

C.0. Thomas (NRC) letter to G.G. Sherwood,

Subject:

Request for Additional Information Regarding the Severe Accident Review of GESSAR II, April 13, 1984 In reference 1, GE is being required to consider proposed design modifications as a condition of closing the GESSAR II Severe Accident review.

It is General Electric's intent to evaluate design modifications, including those in the referenced memorandum, and to formally submit that evaluation to the NRC. The proposed modifications will be qualitatively screened using information from the GESSAR II Probabilistic Risk Assessment, previous internal GE studies and available NRC guidance (such as NUREG/CR-3385, " Measures of Risk Importance and Their Applications,"' July 1983). It is our intent to prepare a draft: report by mid-April and to discuss the evaluations with-the Staff on May 1, 1984. Based on the outcome of that meeting, more detailed quantitative evaluations would be performed on a selected set of proposed design modifications.
