ISSUANCE OF AMENDMENT NO.1 TO FINAL DESIGN APPROVAL N0. FDA-1 The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff has issued the enclosed Amendment No. I to FDA-1, the Final Design Approval for General Electric Company's GESSAR II Nuclear Island design. Amendment No. I to FDA-1 removes the present constraint on the forward referenceability of the GESSAR II design and pemits it to be referenced in new construction permit and operating license applications as provided by Paragraph B.3.b of the Commission's

" Policy Statement on Severe Reactor Accidents Regarding Future Designs and Existing Plants" (50 FR 32138). A copy of the " Notice of Issuance of Amendment No. I to Final Design Approval No. FDA-1," which has been sent to the Federal Register for publication is also enclosed for your information.

It is noted that the NRC staff is nearing the completion of its review of the infomation that GE submitted in response to the criteria specified in Section B.2 of the severe accident policy statement (the severe accident review) for the GESSAR II design. Upon the completion of its review, as well as that of the Advisory Cemittee on Reactor Safeguards, the NRC staff will further emend FDA-1 to implement the results of that review.
