_L_RESDEN UNIT 3 (ILDRS 3)

DOCKET # 050-249 During normal' operation of Dresden Unit 3, while the Unit 3 Diesel Generator (D/G) was being run in preparation to taking the shared Unit 2/3 D/G out of service, the Unit 3 D/G was manually shutdown because of E. high coolant temperature condition that had developed (T.S. 3.9.A.2). There was no effect on public health or safety since the Unit 2/3 D/G and all required emergency core cooling systems were operable. Previous occurrence: R.O. 81-33/01T-0, Docket 050-249. ,,

The cause of this event was a defective check valve on the discharge side of the Unit 3 D/G cooling water pump. The valve was replaced and tested several times to prove its operability. The Unit 3 D/G and its cooling water system were declared operable. The discharge check valves for the Unit 2 and 2/3 D/G cooling water pumps were inspected and it was determined that ~

they also needed replacement since they were essentially in the same condition as the Unit 3 D/G cooling water pump check valve. The check valves were replaced, the systems satisfactorily tested, and placed back in service. A .

procedure revision will be initiated to inspect these valves annually to insure their operability.
