i 1.0 Introduction Dresden Nuclear Power Station is a three reactor generating facility owned and operated by the Comed Company of Chicago, Illinois.

Dresden Station is located at the confluence of the Kankakee and Des l

Plaines Rivers, in Grundy County, near Morris, Illinois.

- t Dresden Unit 1 is a General Electric Boiling Water Reactor with a design not electrical output rating of 200 negawatts electrical (MWe).

The unit is being accommissioned with all nuclear fuel removed from the reactci vessel.

Therefore, no Unit 1 operating data is provided in this report.

Dresden Units 2 and 5 are General Electric Boiling Water Reactors, each licensed at 2527 megawatts

~

thermal.

The gross outputs of Units 2 and 3 are 032 and 834 megawatts electrical, respectively, with design not electrival output ratings of 794 MWe each.

The commercial service date for Unit 2 is 11 August 1970, and 30 October 1971 for Unit 3.

Waste heat is rejected to a man-made cooling lake using the Kankakee River for make-up and the Illinois River for blowdown.

The Architect-Engineer for Dresden Units 2 and 3 was Sargent and Lundy of Chicago, Illinois.

This report for NOVEMBER 1997, was compiled by Gary A.

Abrell of Dresden Regulatory Assurance Staff, telephone number (815) 942-2920, extension 3749.

2.1 UNIT 2 MONTHLY OPERATING EXPERIENCE

SUMMARY

I, Unit 2 began the period near full power and l

remained at that level except for short periods i

for maintenance and surveillance' testing.

On_

November 15, 1997, a load _ drop to 150 MWE began in preparation for single. loop operation to replace i

2 the brushes on the 2A Recirculating Pump Motor Generator.

A drywell entry was made at low power to add oil to the 2B Recirc Pump._ The 2A Recirc i

Pump was restarted at 1530 on November 16, 1997, I

and a load increase began at 2030.

Load increase was halted early on the morning of November-18, l

1997 because of Feedwater Regulating Valve oscillations.

t Following valve repairs, the unit was brought'to

[

full power at-1630 on November 23, 1997.

9 2.0 SUl44ARY OF OPERATING EXPERIENCE FOR NOVEMBER 1997 2.2 UNIT 3 MONTHLY OPERATING EXPERIENCE

SUMMARY

Unit 3 began the period at 515 MWE dropping load to begin a weekend outage to repair reactor coolant leakage in the drywell.

At 1900 on November 1, 1997, the turbine was tripped, and at 2000 the reactor was scrammed to complete the shutdown. A freeze seal was installed to repair a f ailed weld joint on the High Pressurc Flow Element Venturi Instrument Line on the B Recirc loop.

Upon completion of the repairs, reactor startup began about 2030 on November 4, 1997. The reactor was critical at 0055 on November 5, 1997. The unit was on system about 0400 on November 6, 1997, and at full load at 0900 on November 9, 1997.
