NRC NEWS U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION Office of Public Affairs, Region II 245 Peachtree Center Ave. NE, Suite 1200 Atlanta, GA 30303-1257 Web Site: www.nrc.gov No. II-12-014 April 5, 2012 CONTACT: Roger Hannah (404) 997-4417 E-mail: OPA2@nrc.gov Joey Ledford (404) 997-4416 NRC SCHEDULES MEETING IN PIKETON TO DISCUSS LEAD CASCADE FACILITY The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff has scheduled a public meeting in Piketon, Ohio, on Thursday, April 19 to discuss results of the agencys most recent review of USEC Inc.s American Centrifuge Lead Cascade Facility located at the same site.
The meeting is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. EDT at the Ohio State University Endeavor Center, 1864 Shyville Road in Piketon. The NRC staff will discuss with company officials the results of the agencys review of safety performance at the plant from July 11, 2010, to January 31, 2011. The discussion will include the areas of safety operations, radiological controls, facility support and special topics.
In its review, the NRC found no areas needing improvement, but the agency will re-evaluate the inspection program for the current period after the completion of an ongoing inspection of a June 2011 event where multiple centrifuges failed.
The meeting will be open to the public and media, and NRC officials will be available to answer questions after the business portion of the meeting.
