Box 236, Hancocks Bridge, NJ 08038 609-339-4700 Vice President - Nuclear Engineering NLR-N89242 United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission Document Control Desk Washington, DC 20555 Gentlemen:

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION NOTICE OF DEVIATION; R.G. 1.97 SALEM UNIT NO. 1 DOCKET NO. 50-272 In our response dated September 5, 1989 (NLR-N89180), we indicated that the scope and schedule for modifications to the Main steam Line radiation monitors (R46A-E) would be identified by December 31, 1989. The purpose of this letter is to apprise you of the status of our efforts to date, and to establish a revised schedule for identification of modification scope.

Please note that we are not requesting an extension in our previously identified implementation schedule (i.e., Unit 1 tenth and Unit 2 sixth refueling outages).

To date, PSE&G has completed an evaluation of the original modification proposal to establish a fully redundant capability for the R46 monitors. The results of that evaluation indicate that the cost associated with the necessary modifications is on the order of $300,000 to $500,000. As a result, less expensive alternatives are being evaluated; however, the technical and regulatory review of the proposed alternatives has not been completed. We are projecting completion of those reviews by January 31, 1990 and would forward a description and justification for the final modifications at that time.

This matter was discussed with Mr. Dave Allsopp of your staff on December 28, 1989. If you have any questions regarding the above, please feel free to contact us.

Sincerely,
