Box 236, Hancocks Bridge, NJ 08038 609-339-4700 Vice President - Nuclear Engineering APR 2 5 1990 NLR-N90079 United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission Document Control Desk Washington, DC 20555 Gentlemen:

REVISION OF ESTIMATED COMPLETION DATE FOR PENETRATION SEAL PROJECT SALEM GENERATING STATION DOCKET NOS. 50-272 AND 50-311 On August 15, 1989, Public Service Electric and Gas (PSE&G) provided NRC a project status report for the Salem Generating Station (SGS) Penetration Seal Project. Since that time, the project team has further defined the estimated scope and generated a revised schedule for completion of work.

The original schedule was based upon an estimated scope of 9200 penetrations and the estimated time required to process those penetrations from initial scoping through Design Change Package (DCP) close out. However, the schedule now reflects an estimate of 11,645 penetrations and has factored in installation rates based upon actual work experience. Fifty percent (50%) of the work has been completed.

Factors that have influenced the revised completion date include a thirty percent (30%) additional scope, design development, and unit rate of completion. PSE&G has compensated for these factors by including additional engineering and contractor personnel in the project.

As such the estimated completion date (ECD) has been revised from the previously indicated October 1990 date. The new ECD for installation of new penetration seals is March, 1991 with subsequent test and DCP close out by July 1991. It should be noted that a small number of seals may require installation following completion of the project. Access to these seals is restrained due to equipment and outage schedules.
