PROPOSED INCREASE TO ALLOWABLE MSIV CLOSURE TIME FACILITY OPERATING LICENSE NOS. DPR-70 AND DPR-75 SALEM GENERATING STATION UNITS 1 AND 2 DOCKET NOS. 50-272 AND 50-311 Via letter dated April 20, 1990 (NLR-N90088), PSE&G described a corrective action plan for slow MSIV closures experienced at Salem Unit Nos. 1 and 2. At the request of the NRC, implementation of a solution to the slow closures is presently scheduled for the ninth refueling*-'outage 'fbr Unit No. 1 and the sixth refueling outage for Unit No. 2. The'NRC has also requested, via telecon on April 20, 1990, that PSE&G provide a schedule of milestones supporting the implementation of the corrective actions. PSE&G's present schedule is provided below.

Completion of a preliminary Design Change Package (DCP) acceptable to the MSIV vendor and cognizant PSE&G technical and engineering personnel is planned for July 30, 1990. Finalization and approval of the DCP is targeted for the first week of September, 1990. The Unit No. 1 ninth refueling outage is scheduled to begin on September 15, 1990.

The NRC will be kept apprised of PSE&G's progress in this effort.
